If you have been involved in an accident, you should immediately call 911. Once you have received first aid and you have overcome the shock, you should access the damage to your vehicle. You should exchange registration and insurance details with the other drivers. Do not accuse the at fault driver. It is best you just exchange the information and remain quiet. This is not the time to determine fault.

Make a mental note of everything that you see – the position of the vehicles, the damage caused, etc. If you have a pen and paper, you should write it down. Wait for the police to arrive and record your statement. Once you give your statement, seek the permission of the police officer to leave the scene. Generally you can collect a copy of the police report from the police station the next day.

Remember when you meet with an accident, you are likely to be in a state of shock and you are unlikely to remember the finer details. Finer details of the accident can play a vital role in the outcome of your claim. It is therefore important that you take photographs of the accident scene.

If you have a camera with you, you should take the photographs as soon as you can. If you don’t have a camera with you at the time of the accident, you can return the next day and take photographs. The photographs can be used as evidence of the damage and also to determine fault.
